You have booked the jump. Your palms sweat every time you glance at the calendar. Good. That flutter of nerves means you are about to do something most people only talk about at braais and never actually do. Let us walk you through exactly what happens, from arrival to the moment your feet touch the ground again.
Arrival and Briefing
You arrive at the airfield and our team greets you immediately. We do not rush you through paperwork and out the door. Instead, we sit you down for a proper briefing where a qualified instructor explains the body position, the exit, and what your stomach might do somewhere around eleven thousand feet. Ask every question you have. Our instructors love answering them, and a relaxed jumper always has more fun than a tense one.
Gearing Up
Next, we fit your harness snugly (it needs to hold you securely to your instructor, so expect a firm fit rather than a comfortable one) and pair you with the tandem master who will jump attached to you. This person has completed hundreds, often thousands, of jumps. You are in genuinely capable hands.
The Climb
The aircraft climbs steadily for roughly fifteen to twenty minutes. Johannesburg unfolds below you in a patchwork of gold mine dumps, farmland, and suburbs, and most first timers forget their nerves entirely once they see the view. Your instructor checks your harness one final time as the plane levels out.
The Jump
The door opens, the wind roars, and you shuffle forward. Then you tip out into freefall. For about thirty to forty five seconds you drop at roughly two hundred kilometres per hour, and nothing in daily life prepares you for that sensation. It genuinely feels like flying, not falling.
The Canopy Ride
Your instructor deploys the parachute, the freefall roar cuts to silence, and you drift gently for several minutes. This part surprises people the most. It is peaceful, almost meditative, and gives you time to actually process what just happened before your feet meet the landing field.
Back on Solid Ground
You land, legs a little wobbly, grinning uncontrollably, already planning how you will tell this story for the next decade. That is the whole experience, start to finish, and our team at Johannesburg Skydiving Club handles every step of it with care and genuine enthusiasm. If reading this got your palms sweating too, book your tandem skydive with us and find out what all the fuss is about.
